Why?

There are times when I ask myself why? Today is one of them. Outside the sun is shining and the birds are singing. I could be out there working on my bike. Instead I’m stuck in the cold dark house, a slave to the washing machine which is working ten to the dozen cleaning other people’s clothes, all the while listening to a CD which promises to teach me German in only 6 weeks! Occasionally I pick more grey paint out of my left ear. Okay, I’ll admit that this isn’t a ‘I’m trapped at the bottom of a well with a man eating lemur’ kind of why (that would require some serious inflection) but still it gets me thinking, and the only answer I can come up with, is that some things sound like a really good idea when your drunk!

Get ready for the flash back, your screen may go wibbly.

Rodgers & Hammerstein once wrote “let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start…” And a pub is a very good place to start. Taverns can be better, but only if they have hooded strangers, and due to an absence of hooded strangers in this little town, we’ll go for the pub. So I’m in the pub (just in case you hadn’t worked out where that train of thought was going) surrounded by friends, the beer is flowing cheap and fast when someone pipes up “Wouldn’t it be really cool to make a zombie movie?” Well obviously yes it would, zombies rock (Okay, lurch, but it’s the same thing really) and this proposed zombie film remains the topic of the conversation for the rest of the night.

Now I’m sure that the above is actually a pretty normal thing. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that every night, in pubs around the planet, someone, somewhere asks that question. What isn’t normal is when this drunken idea decides to hang around for just a little bit longer than it really should.

Now to be honest I can’t actually remember whose idea it was, I can’t remember much about that night except spending some quality time, communing with the toilet when I got home. But I do remember that the next day, through the pain and misery of one hell of a hangover it still seemed like a good idea. That was late 2001 and an impressive mix of nothing and everything has happened since then. Some of it has even involved zombies!
